P for plus

Plus is the sum of a number and the next one(s): Two PLUS two equals four, e.g.

PLUS is a positive quantity: He is a real PLUS to the team.

PLUS is an advantage: Knowing the language is a decided PLUS.

PLUS is something extra: Nat Geo PLUS provides subscribing members "all-access pass for unlimited articles, exclusive ebooks, and streaming films."

PLUS is an indication that the standard of a piece of work is slightly higher than the stated mark: I got B PLUS (B+) for my essay.

PLUS is electrically positive: A battery has both a PLUS pole and a minus pole.

I've been participating with ABC Wednesday for 15-PLUS rounds, covering 7-PLUS years. It has been a real PLUS in my life, where I've been able to "meet" people such as the members of the team and all of you participants. I was going to start naming names, but the list got too long, and some of you would have been nonPLUSSED has I left you off the list.

The number of participants have had their PLUSES and minuses from week to week, but I think it's a PLUS for me to visit each and every one of you. It might take all week, but so be it.

It will be a PLUS to your fellow contributors if you visit one blog on the roster you usually don't follow.

O is for observations about the ABC W alphabet

This being the last round that I'M running the ABC Wednesday meme before Melody takes over, I've been musing over a bit of history of the participation by youse folks over the years. I've looked through all of the inLinks data, which started with 6Z (82 participants) - before that, Denise was using a different product to allow you to post. I've calculated the average participation for every letter for Rounds 7 through 19.

The highest numbers were always in Round 7 and/or 8 (it was a tie in the Z week), and the lowest in Rounds 18 or 19, with one odd exception. I'm pleased to note that in Round 20, the numbers are higher than in Round 19.

A-88.54 (high 128, low 45) - A is almost always lower than B, except in Round 13
B-96.38 (high 147, low 47)
C-98.23 (high 149, low 50) - as you can see, the highest average
D-91.85 (high 136, low 49)
E-87.54 (high 138, low 43)

F-95.38 (high 151, low 48) - 151, in Round 8, is the highest number we've reached
G-92.54 (high 141, low 53) - for my own posts, I was tempted to always use green, but I chose otherwise
H-91.15 (high 147, low 48)
I-84.69 (high 139, low 45)
J-82.15 (high 141, low 41)

K-80.54 (high 127, low 44) - K is a difficult letter to find a word?
L-86.23 (high 145, low 50)
M-86.46 (high 139, low 41)
N-78.08 (high 126, low 43)
O-80.00 (high 126, low 51) - I thought that the vowels in general did worse than the vowels around them; not so here
P-88.54 (high 143, low 50)
Q-72.00 (high 114, low 46) - for my own posts, I used Queen more than once, including Elizabeth II and Freddie Mercury
R-80.46 (high 117, low 45) - I've written about two dozen of these intros, probably more than anyone except Denise, who wrote them all in the early days
S-83.85 (high 117, low 49)
T-83.38 (high 137, low 50)

U-70.38 (high 109, low 42)
V-72.54 (high 104, low 45)
W-77.38 (high 108, low 51)
X-56.54 (high 88, low 35) - half the time, this lands around the winter holidays in the Northern Hemisphere; many have used Xmas, and/or shapes that LOOK like the letter X
Y-64.46 (high 94, low 45) - we hit 45 in rounds 15, 17, 18 AND 19
Z-60.46 (high 85, low 34) -the lowest number we reached was in Round 18

20-N

Hello and good morning, -afternoon, -evening, dear people who all participate is this wonderful photo-meme, which is a joy to me, week after week, after week. I’m always curious to what you come up with!

The challenging letter of this week is N and I've chosen for the word: Nothing

Thinking about that word... I realize that I think that it is a strange word because what does it really mean?  Does it even really exist?

In the province of The Netherlands, where I was born and raised, we have flat land, and much much much empty spaces like you see on my photo. One could say, there is nothing but is that really true?

Can one see nothing, can one hear nothing, can one feel nothing? I would say: No one can not because there is always something, no matter how small, invisible even maybe, but still, there is something. To be seen, to be heard, to be felt.

In another way... having to live with a bi-polar disorder... nothing is a word that can frighten me sometimes. How strange is that, as I am convinced at the same time that 'nothing' does not exist? Still my conviction does not always have the upperhand. Feeling 'nothing' is not possible but feeling 'alone' in the sense that there is nothing / nobody for you at such a desperate moment... makes anxious.

Nothing... if it were up to me I would erase that word in any language, or change it into something which tells us that it is something 'strange', non existent even perhaps.

What ever it really it... we all see, we all hear, we all feel.
We all are human and living.
Life is, however less it sometimes might look, never nothing but always something.

I am very curious to your ideas about this word, so please share them with me?

Have a nice ABC-Wednesday-day / - week ~

20-M

Hello and good morning, -afternoon, -evening, dear people who all participate is this wonderful photo-meme, which is a joy to me, week after week, after week. I’m always curious to what you come up with!

The challenging letter of this week is M and I've chosen for: Middle

M is the 13th letter of our alfabet, at least in the perspective which we use to participate in this meme. So we are in the MIDDLE of that alfabet of round 20.

That also means that we have 13 letters left to go before we reach the final end of ABC-Wednesday in the way we all came to discover, learn and love it.

Today in exactly 14 weeks, I sincerely and intense hope to may welcome you all in the 21rst beginning of the new ABC-Wednesday on its new location at Wordpress, were we hopefully all will be witness of many 'beginnings, middles and ends'

 Have a nice ABC-Wednesday-day / - week

LAPSE OF MEMORY

Welcome to ABC Wednesday, Round 20, Letter L!!!  I have to admit that I had a slight lapse of memory this past week about doing the introduction.  I did remember but then got busy doing my own personal contribution and then proceeded to figure I was done and ready!  So, I'm just getting into bed here and thought I'd check my emails one last time and what do you think...an email from Roger, our level-headed administrator asking if I was doing it!  He must be laughing at me because usually I'm so organized.  I'm so lucky he emailed me.

Anyway, it's past my bedtime now so I better just wish everyone a lovely and lively week and I do  hope your Spring is springing better where you are than it is here.  I think the crocuses have given up because I see daffodils trying to sprout but not many blooms around just yet.  See you over at The Pedalogue (my blog site) where I am lamenting how life is passing by like the speed of light.

K for F D Kilday.

Fay Diane Kilday.

This delightful poem from F.D. Kilday , I would like to dedicate to my darling husband Ian....

Because of you,

My world is a much nicer place, Because of you

I know what it means to love

 unconditionally

I have faith in the human race.

 Because of you,

I know what it means to give unselfishly.

 Because of you,

I believe in magic and mystery

 and worlds unseen.

 Because of you,

Ian showing one of  his special Birthday beers..Cheers, Sante, Braust !

As most of my friends on ABCW know that Ian will be having a tripple by-pass vi' open heart surgery within 4-5 weeks
.So please join me in prayers and special thoughts for a good recovery.
I know we are both in our early 70's but there is so much more we want to do. Particularly, to spend valuable time with our beloved families, they are everything to us.
Our first born grandchild Molly celebrates her 13th birthday today...
A teenager at last..
 ' Happy Birthday Molls'.
Her Mummy Kirsten, our eldest daughter, is Keeping a close eye on this Kittenish little lady, being fully aware of the capers she got up to when she was a teenager !
She is a lovely girl, kind loving and does very well at her school... Keep up the good work darling Molls, we are so proud of you.xxx

To finish this most touching prose by Faye Diane KILDAY.

'There is joy- wherever you are

 and have ever been.

 And all because of you'

My sincere thanks to the ever Joyful Denise who first devised abcw, to Roger who uses his Journalistic skills, ably assisted by the Jaunty Leslie. Not forgetting the busy team who Jog around abcw and make appropriate comments on their allotted memes.

20-J = Joop

The challenging letter of this week is J and I've chosen for the name Joop

This post is an introduction to all of you...
meet my husband, Johannes Wilhelmus Antonius, called in short: Joop
(This photo is taken on June 4th 2016, on Joops' 59th birthday)

We met on Sunday May 15th 1977 and became friends, part of a larger group with no couples in it at that time. Due to an accident on 28th of October 1979 I broke my back and landed in hospital for almost a year. He and (just) one other friend (who died 29th of december 2015 at the age of 58 due to cancer after her husband died in 2000 at the age of 54 due to cancer also. She left behind 4 young childeren, the youngest one was just 5 months old at the time her husband died) stayed at my side.

8th of June 1980 we became officially a couple. On the 25th of December 1980 we got engaged and on the 28th of April 1983 we started living together. On the 9th of December 1983 we got married. On the 10th of January 1985 we became parents of our daughter and she became a sister on 29th of November 1990 when her brother was born. On 13th of March 2013 we became grandparents.

We have survived lots of anguish which almost drove us apart but we wouldn't give in so we fought for our marriage, ourselves and our "significant other" and we succeeded!

Still going strong together and with full intent to keep it that way!

 Have a nice ABC-Wednesday-day / - week

I love music

As usual, when I have an intro to write but don't have a topic, I go to the MUSIC. These are:

# songs that start with the word I, and not I'll or I'm, which would make the list even LONGER!
# that I know; there's a couple other titles that sounded familiar, but eh
# that went to number 1 on the US Billboard pop charts
# that came out before 1992, because my Billboard Book of Number One Hits ends there

Links to all; hope they work in your country

I Am Woman - Helen Reddy 19721209-1

I Can Help - Billy Swan 19741123-2
I Can See Clearly Now - Johnny Nash 19721104-4

I Can't Get Next To You - the Temptations 19691018-2
(I Can't Get No) - Satisfaction - Rolling Stones 19650710-4
I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) - Daryl Hall and John Oates 19820130-1
I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) - The Four Tops 19650619-2
I Can't Stop Loving You - Ray Charles 19620602-5

I Feel Fine - the Beatles 19641226-3
I Feel the Earth Move -Carole King 19710619-5 (Two-sided hit with It's Too Late)

I Get Around - the Beach Boys 19640704-2

I Heard It Through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye 19681214-7

I Honestly Love You - Olivia Newton-John 19741005-2

I Just Called To Say I Love You - Stevie Wonder 19841013-3
I Love A Rainy Night - Eddie Rabbit 19810228-2
I Love Rock 'n' Roll - Joan Jett and the Blackhearts 19820320-7

I Shot the Sheriff - Eric Clapton 19740914-1

I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2 19870808-2

I Think I Love You - Partridge Family 19701121-3
I Think We're Alone Now - Tiffany 19871107-2

I Want to Hold Your Hand - the Beatles 19640201-7 (studio versions are notoriously difficult to find in the US; this is the group on the Ed Sullivan Show)
I Want to Know What Love Is - Foreigner 19850202-2
I Want You Back - The Jackson Five 19700131-01
I Want You, I Need You, I Love You - Elvis Presley 19560728-1

I Will Follow Him - Little Peggy March 19630427-3
I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor 19790310-3

I Wish- Stevie Wonder 19770122-1

I Write the Songs - Barry Manilow 19760117-1 (written by Bruce Johnston)

As for those numeric designations, that represents the week, in YYYYMMDD format, that the song first went to number one. The number after the hyphen indicates how many weeks it was nimber one, not necessarily consecutively.

Note that the first three I Want... songs all went to #1 the same relative week (31 Jan-2 Feb)

H is Where the Heart is.

My last name starts with an H.

When I was a kid there was a big "H" right on the middle of the storm door at the front of our house.

One of my earliest memories is walking up to the front porch with my father and he pointed at the door and said "H is for Home."

For years, I wondered why everyone else didn't have an "H" for "Home" on their front door.

I was much older before I realized that no matter what your last name might be, Home is where your Heart is.

Won't you share something from your Heart and Home with us today?

G is for GARDENS

I often take the time to replenish my soul by seeing through my camera lens into the glory and beauty of God's creation. Then today, while I was thinking over what I wanted to post for this introduction, I looked up some quotes about gardens. Much to my surprise, I discovered that I recognized myself in some of these quotes:

The best place to seek God is in a garden. You can dig for Him there. (George Bernard Shaw)

You can bury a lot of troubles digging in the dirt. (Author Unknown)

I think that if ever a mortal heard the voice of God it would be in a garden at the cool of the day. (F. Frankfort Moore, A Garden of Peace)

Bread feeds the body, indeed, but flowers feed also the soul. (The Koran)

We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between we garden.

I genuinely enjoy gardening, or I must say "used to" enjoy gardening, but now because of the ghastly onslaught of aging along with its various complaints like bad back and knees, I glory in my ability to stroll around various gardens to capture the glamour and grace of their rich colours among the greenery.  Never without a camera, be it a Canon or a cellphone, I'm always on the lookout for an opportunity to grasp the moment for posterity.

It's the middle of February now, and everyone is getting very tired of the gradual transition into Spring.  When we spy some snowdrops or crocus bulbs pushing through the earth still laden in some places with soggy snow, we become giddy with excitement that soon we will be glad to see the glowing sunshine.
Therefore, for those of you who are feeling like I am - cold, depressed, tired all the time from the grey skies, take comfort that it won't be long until you'll be griping about the heat, the galling chores of mowing the lawn and weeding the gardens, and longing for the crispness of Autumn. But beware, the seasons flow into each other with the greatness of ease and as we age, we must always be grateful for God's gift of gardens.  I know I certainly felt His presence while gallivanting around the many gardens I visited last summer in Wales, and I look forward to many more great trips to see even more.  I'll be the old lady with the cane the tour leader is guiding into the coach!

F for Ferry.

Where I live in Liverpool, a city built on the edge of The River Mersey, This is the river that the Famous Merseybeat band called Gerry and the Pacemakers sang about The Ferry 'cross the Mersey, 'cos this land's the land I love'.

This was in the in the 'Swinging  Sixties' when Liverpool was churning out many talented singers and bands.

Not Forgetting,  of course, The Fabulous Beatles.

The Royal Daffodil  FERRY.

This a picture of one of the Famous,  River Mersey Ferries chugging home; Full of happy day trippers after a Fun packed day out in New Brighton, where the children can enjoy all the 'Fun of the Fair,' eating  Frankfurter sausages stuffed into a big squashy, soft bread rolls, with translucent onions layered in a line underneath the sausages then tomato ketchup and mustard slathered over the top.....heaven in a roll....

 (picture from iStock)

Hot Dog... .Heaven !

The most famous of the Mersey Ferries was the Royal Iris. It is a twin screw diesel-electric Ferryboat and was built in 1950 and commissioned in 1951. It had a maximum speed of 12 knots and could carry 2296 passengers on normal ferry duties and 1000 for cruising. On board amenities included, a dancefloor  and stage, cocktail bar and a fish and chip saloon, hence it was nick named 'the fish and chip boat.In June 1957 the Liverpool's Cavern Club created the Legendary Riverboat Shuffles. I think a guy called Ray McFall was the instigator of these fab cruises.

The Royal Iris was a beautiful Art Deco -style ship and the cruises wre very popular with Jazz Bands such as Acker Bilk and Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen. The Beatles played 4 times with Acker Bilk just as they were on the cusp of fame.

the Royal Iris in it's hey day

Thanks to Denise Roger Leslie and the team of helpers, without you ABCW would not have lasted for ten years...here's to the next ten years.
Best regards to you all
from
Di.

E if for EXIT and ENTRANCE

You probably hadn't heard about this, but in the United States, one President (44) EXITED the White House after eight years, while another (45) ENTERED in January 2017.

In 2016, in the United Kingdom, which agreed to EXIT (or Brexit, if you will) the European Union, one Prime Minister EXITED #10 Downing Street after a little more than six years, while another, UK's second woman PM, ENTERED it.

In fact, if you look at this April 2016 picture of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande, US President Barack Obama, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and British Prime Minister David Cameron, taken at the G20 summit, you'll note that only one of them, Merkel, is still in power.

And so it goes in our personal lives, with people ENTERING and EXITING. I've noticed, though, that social media, has allowed me to stay in touch with some people who have moved away with whom I might otherwise have lost touch. AND I have "met" people online that I've never seen in person at all, including on this blog.

I had written last year of ABC Wednesday EXITING the scene. But then Melody ENTERED the picture and decided to sustain it. So as we have ENTERED the 20th round, know that discussions of our EXIT are apparently premature.

 Mrs. Nesbitt's ABC-Wednesday

Hello and good morning, -afternoon, -evening, dear people who all participate is this wonderful photo-meme, which is a joy to me, week after week, after week. I’m always curious to what you come up with!

The challenging letter of this week is D and I've chosen for DELIGHT

I want to introduce you to the greatest DELIGHT of my life, the living kind that is.
My dogs... The first one is a Scottish Shepherd dog called Brego and the second one is a ladycat called Precious and the third one is French King Poodle called Noah.

Precious is born in our home but Brego and Noah are shelterdogs. April 28th 1983 we started living together and on that same day we got 2 kittens, followed by many others. We also had lots of different birds in the house.

November 9th 1984 I quit my job for maternity leave and the next day we went to a shelter to get a dog, ever since that day we had dogs as well.

We made the choice to never buy a puppy from a breeder because the shelters are always crowded and that animals in such places need our help and love much more that to put money in somebody's hand to create more animals which partly end up in misery.

Noah is the eldest or our trio, he celebrated his 14h birtday, january 2 last. Precious will celebrate her 14th birthday coming march 28th and Brego will celebrate his 9th birthday coming july 9th.

To have animals in the house is always one of the biggest joys. We had lots of them during the past years and we would like to have much more but we have to be realistic as wel. There is just not enough space for it. If we had had the space we would have oned even larger dogs, my favorites are the great Danes for example. We always search for addions to our family which will fit the best, thinking of not only their size but more so their needs, which differs enormously per breed.

Like I wrote already, my greatest living delight are animals, all kinds. One of my dreams has always been to have a shelter of my own but for that one needs a lot of money and that we never had. So in our 'little' way we try to do the best we can for animals in need by donating money and taking them in our home.

Our household is ruled by them ;-) we adjust ourselves around them and their needs.

Animals are precious and vulnerable ccreatures, they need us! If I could change one thing in the world then it would be that no animal ever would have to suffer again in any way!

C is for Continuation of ABC Wednesday

As many of you know, Denise Nesbitt, the doyenne of this meme, started ABC Wednesday nearly ten years ago. She was doing it all herself early on, then assembling a team to help her. I (Roger) found my way here in the middle of Round 5 (K is for Keating Five), and joining the team a few months later.

A couple years after that, Mrs. Nesbitt had tired of being the administrator, and she asked me to take over, and I did, with Round 11, ably assisted by Leslie from VanCan. But I too was feeling burnt out even a year ago, and Leslie didn't want to take it over either. So we decided to end the thing with Round 20, a nice even number representing a decade of the meme.

But then, one of the team members, Melody, indicated that MAYBE she wanted to take it over. Then, a few days later, she decided she DEFINITELY wanted to do it.
For all sorts of reasons, I had required a new URL for Round 21, since it has Mrs. Nesbitt's name attached, and I didn't feel it was my place to pass it on to a third party, as Denise had directly passed it to me.

Moreover, I've been reading the futurists' literature on technology - I'm a librarian, after all - and I was/am concerned by the possibility that Blogger/Blogspot will not be supported past 2017. Not did I require a new address for ABC Wednesday, but highly suggested that it be on a WordPress platform.

As it turns out, Melody is much more comfortable with WordPress. The new URL will be http://abcwednesday.wordpress.com and it will start around July 12.

And Melody has gotten her own Linky device so that you can contribute to ABC Wednesday each week; Mrs. Nesbitt, then I, were paying for the previous one.

In return, I said we would mention the change in some of the intros for Round 20, notably this one here, and when the Mrs Nesbitt ABC W blog stops, there would be a pointer to the new blog.

Some of the team will remain - I will, for sure, at least for a while - and she has recruited a couple newbies, Vonnie and Daphne. And I don't have to be in charge, which will be good for me.

So ABC Wednesday WILL live on, as it turns out. Tell all your blogging buddies!

B is for BELIEVE

Greetings one and all to the final B of the current ABC Wednesday!  When considering what to write as an introduction this week, it suddenly came upon me to write about the word BELIEVE.  The word itself means to have confidence in the truth, the existence, or the reliability of something, although without absolute proof that one is right in doing so.

Lately, most of us have been feeling either sadness or antipathy with regard to the continuation of ABC Wednesday. If Roger and I retire from administering it, will it die?  Will anyone step up to the plate to be a new leader?

Well, I'm so happy to announce that we do have a new administrator -  a very excited and dedicated Melody - who will begin in Round 21.  She has two new members who will be her assistants, although I will remain on the team to write a few introductions if they so wish.

Of course, we hope that everyone will continue to participate because this meme is probably one of the longest running (if not, THE longest running) meme on the web right now.  I know from my personal experience that I have met several bloggers through ABCW and believe that these people have become true new friends.  It has been an amazing ride helping Roger with the weekly visits, doing introductions, my own blog, and, at times, editing the Linky.

It's time for a change, hopefully a change for the better!  Not that ABCW has become stale, but with new people at the helm, new ideas will blossom

So join me in welcoming Melody as the new administrator of ABC Wednesday, which you can preview here, if you like.  Also, welcome to the two new assistants Vonnie  and Daphne. We trust that they will love steering us into the future as much as Roger and the current team have enjoyed it thus far.  I believed in the existence of ABCW and that it would continue  if others wanted it.  Now we have the  absolute proof that continuing it is the right thing to do.

A for Austrian Adventures.

AUSTRIA....

When I reached the tender age of twenty my parents, at last, allowed me to go on holiday with my boyfriend albeit with another couple and their respective widowed mothers. We landed in Munich Airport and then, had a harrowing 4 hour journey in a rickety old coach. I remember the day clearly, it was the day England won the world cup against Germany in 1966.

Our coach driver had the radio playing so we could hear the match report , needless to say he was German and was full of guff because on the last second of 90 minutes Germany scored to equalise and force extra time, however England went on to win 4-2 in extra time.

So, there we were, in the midst of Bavaria with German flags flying everywhere, and we Brits' all 20 of us, were dancing up and down with delight celebrating our fabulous win over Germany.

I'm surprised the coach driver didn't drive us into a ravine !

AUSTRIA Seefeld.  Our first vision of Seefeld was this beautiful church that stands in the middle of a meadow strewn with pretty wild flowers. The church is called Seekirchl.

Wintertime in  Seefeld AUSTRIA.

Snow on the mountain even in summertime.

Another church nestling in a valley next to Seefeld.

We stayed in a lovely little 'Family run' Hotel called The Bellevue. It stood on a plateau overlooking the village, and to the rear there was a forest of enormous fir trees, that whistled and groaned  when it was windy.

I don't  remember the name of the family but they were wonderful hosts, Breakfasts were simple and plentiful with yoghurt and fruit, Austrian cheeses and warm home made bread, Also we would have slices of home cured ham and new laid eggs.

If we were going out  they would make us a picnic of food similar to our breakfast but also some delicious home made quiche. Some times we would amble into town and then return for lunch which usually consisted of a huge tureen of steaming hot soup heaving with vegetables and pasta shapes and of course, the ubiquitous crusty bread. At dinner we dined on veal escalopes cooked in a creamy pepper sauce or a hearty beef ragout with  enormous fluffy herby dumplings.

Each week our hosts would hold a traditional Austrian Evening, where they would don their Nation Costumes, Leiderhosen for the men and pretty floral dresses for the ladies.

This is the world famous Gundolf Family performing in one of their Tyrolean Evenings, We managed to see them on a trip to Innsbruck, which was about 10 miles away.

Alpine horn players such amazing sounds.

Above is the beautiful city of Innsbruck. surrounded by The Alps.

Whilst we were staying in Austria we travelled over The Brenner Pass (below)

to visit The Dolomites into Northern Italy.

There lies another tale which will be my subject for the letter 'B'.
