Round 18

Y

Hello and good morning, -afternoon, -evening, dear people who all participate is this wonderful photomeme, which is a joy to me, week after week, after week.

I’m always curious to what you come up with!

The challenging letter of this week is the Y and i've chosen the word:  Yearn

This isn't one of the easiest letters, is it?
After looking at the (to be honest, very short, list with Y-words) nothing popped up to my mind. An extra difficulty ofcourse, is the fact that the English language is not my native one.
In that second I realised that I had found my word. Yearning; for a more open mind, better and clearer head to come up with something sensable to write about in this intro.

Yearning...a feeling we all know, I think.
That what we yearn for differs from one person to another but aren't we all also yearning for the same things? Beeing healthy, happy, satisfied and even 'rich' in terms of wealth.
Overhere in The Netherlands we have a saying:
"Gezonde mensen hebben 1000 wensen, zieke mensen hebben er maar 1."
Translated it says: "Healthy people have 1000 wishes, sick people only have one"
The yearning for all things becomes little and far less important if one struggles with health-issues.

But still....the 'other' yearnings...  I have them  too...
One of which I very recently got fullfilled. After saving for a long time, I was able to buy the camera I've yearned for for a very long time. That made, still makes, me happy; the second yearning in the same row. Another thing I yearn for is that september the 30th soon will be here so my favorite people start performing in the theaters again. I also yearn for the autumn because I truly don't like the summertime. I (ofcourse) could name lots and lots of yearnings more...

My last yearning for this post is for you to share your yearnings with us....

Round 18

W

Hello and good morning, -afternoon, -evening, dear people who all participate is this wonderful photomeme, which is a joy to me, week after week, after week.

I’m always curious to what you come up with!

The challenging letter of this week is the X and i've chosen the word:  X

This letter is used for many things in our daily lives.
In fact, it does not matter at all which language our native tongue is, we all know what is meant when we see it in a certain context.

Of course, like everything else, the X also has two sides, the wonderful one and the lesser nicer one.
In this post i just want to focus on the wonderful side. Negativeness is more than enough around, we don't have to add to it, do we?

So...the positive X.
Used as a greeting for example, we all know that it stands for a kiss, no matter where we are born, were we live and which language we call our native one.
Kisses are wonderful to get from someone we like, admire, hold dear to our hearts, and love in any way possible.
Although we would not automatically kiss every person we meet, of course not, but a kiss is so simple to give when ones feelings towards the other person are sincere, especcialy when the feelings are mutual of course!
The form of that kiss depends totally on the relationship one has with the other but still the kiss in itself is one of the most precious gifts one can give and receive.

So... to all of you....
my sincere greetings, sealed with a kiss!

Have a nice ABC-Wednesday-day / - week

Round 18

W

Hello and good morning, -afternoon, -evening, dear people who all participate is this wonderful photomeme, which is a joy to me, week after week, after week.

I’m always curious to what you come up with!

The challenging letter of this week is the and I've chosen the word:  WE

We all are part of this meme, amazing and wonderful!
What this meme does with us, means to every one and each of us, is probably very different but this meme binds us together in multiple ways.

At some time in point this meme did come up in the mind of one person  She developped it and after some time she got a growing group of followers which became participants. Some time after that she needed to have a team to assist her and she found it.

One of those team members is Gattina, a lady who lives in Belgium, my 'neighbour' to the southside of The Netherlands, where I live.

This blogpost is in honour of all of us but mostly in hers.
"Why?" You ask? Well, let me show & tell you!

In four weeks from today the next round of ABC-Wednesday will start.... the 19th!

Each round has its own logo and I am very proud to may introduce the new logo to you, which Gattina designed and created.

 What do you say?
Will WE do our best to make round 19 a success also?

 Have a nice ABC-Wednesday-day / - week

V stands for Venerable.

The Venerable Bede

The Venerable Bede is widely known as the greatest of all Anglo Saxon scholars, born in 673AD  He was a monk and was also a much revered English historian and scientist.

He was educated by Benedict Biscop who founded the monastery in Monkswearmouth in 674AD

The ruins of Monkwearmouth Monastery.

At the age of seven The Venerable Bede was put into a monastery where he learned Greek, Latin and Hebrew, he became one of the most learned men in England. It was of general opinion that he came from  a Noble family who were anxious for him to have a good education.

St Peter's Church,

His most acclaimed work was 'The Ecclesiastical History of the English People'. It tells the story of the conversion of the English people; it is the main source of information about English history, from the arrival of St Augustine in Kent until 737AD

The book begins a lot earlier with Julius Caesar's invasion in 55AD

It draws upon several other sources, each of which Bede acknowledges in footnotes, after briefly describing Christianity in Roman Britain.
Julius Caesar leading his troops in battle.

I It goes on to describe St.Augustine's  mission, which brought Christianity to Anglo-Saxons.

Map of Roman Britain.

In subsequent years the history describes the attempts to convert the different kingdoms of Britain, including Mercia,  Sussex and Northumbria. The Venerable Bede was famous in The Middle Ages for his works on the interpretation of scripture,  the natural world and how to calculate the date of Easter.

The Moon indicating the tides.

Proof that the World is round.

He also calculated that the moon affected the tides and also that the world was round; This was quite an achievement at that time. 'Historia Ecclesiastic Gentis Anglorum', which was completed in 731 AD. It is the first work of history in which the AD system of dating was used.

The word VENERABLE has several meanings, here are some that I feel apply to THE VENERABLE BEDE..   .reserved , esteemed, honoured,  dignified, respected, worshipped..............VENERATED.

That's me done with the V letter, can't say it's one of my favourite letters. I'm never too happy to have a V when playing Scrabble, particularly when nearing the end of the game!

My sincere thanks to the VIVACIOUS Denise who devised ABCW and to Roger our VERACIOUS administrator. Also not forgetting the team of helpers who assist Roger with the visits each week.
Best wishes,
 Di.
